New Mainstream Green initiative – Syracuse CNY Freecycle Facebook Group

Mainstream Green launched an initiative in 2020 by setting up and are managing a new Facebook group, Syracuse CNY Freecycle. With more than 500 members now, people are able to keep useful items they no longer need out of the waste stream while at the same time offering other people things they need and can make good use of, for free. Win win!

To combat "Covid" holiday season blues, we set up a special holiday program the "Gift Shoppe," where people who might not be able to afford gifts, can find something they might like to give to friends or family. A number of group members have donated nearly new or new items for the Gift Shoppe.

Don't idle your engine when in line waiting for COVID testWe are seeing long lines of cars is in New York, California, Washington DC and other places where COVID-19 testing is taking place. People are understandably concerned about whether or not they have this disease, so they may not realize that if they keep their car engines on continuously as they wait, they will be making things worse for anyone with the virus, or the flu, or a cold, or asthma, or coronary disease. There are enough challenges to our public health, that we don't need any additional stress on America's lungs and hearts. Please remember: When your car is in "P", #TURNitOFF!

 

 

Americans waste 3.8 MILLION gallons of fuel EVERY day, by idling! That’s a lot of wasted fuel. At $2.62 a gallon for gas on April 6, 2018, that’s $9,950,000 dollars being burned up for nothing. Every. Single. Day.

Idling also contributes to local air pollution, respiratory disease, and global climate change. All we need to do as a society, to stop this waste and damage, is to turn our cars off whenever they are not in motion.

Many people have expressed concern about the impact that plastic shopping bag bans would have on  low income people.

Mainstream Green in the News: Provided Thousands of Reusable Shopping Bags to Food Pantries

Many people have expressed concern about the impact that plastic shopping bag bans would have on  low income people. Mainstream Green has addressed this issue in a number of ways, including donating thousands of reusable bags to food pantries throughout Onondaga County NY, and using social media to suggest that other charities in other counties and states take the same action.

MLK Day: Lifting #EnvironmentalJustice with Reusable Bags

MainstreamGreen has eliminated the waste of 364,000 single use plastic shopping bags this year alone by donating thousands of reusable shopping bags to food pantries in Onondaga County, NY.  Here Mainstream Green's president, Dana Johnston, delivers 200 bags for distribution at the Martin Luther King day of service celebration at Syracuse Model Neighborhood Facility, Inc.

Mainstream Green in the News: Ways to be Environmentally Friendly over the Holidays

The holidays can be brighter for our planet if people make greener choices in gifts, wrapping, eating and drinking while enjoying their traditions! Having less waste, of energy, food, or materials, can have a beneficial impact.
